Fun Things to Do Near Park Forest This Fall

Park Forest is an award-winning town located thirty miles south of downtown Chicago. This recipient of the All-America City Award and Burnham Award for Excellence came to inception as a planned, post World War II community and has served as inspiration for other towns ever since.


Conveniently located near Highway 57 and the Calumet Expressway, and also having three Metra commuter rail line stations, Park Forest is an easy destination for some family fun!

This eclectic art museum is tucked in the downtown Cultural Center. It highlights local Illinois artists during themed gallery exhibits that change up throughout the year. They offer art school classes as well if you want to try your hand at a painting of your own or simply purchase a unique piece from the gift shop.


Make sure to stop here in mid September when the annual Park Forest Art Fair is going on. Browse through exhibits of paintings, photographs, glass displays, sculptures and more while listening to live music. Kids can partake in hands-on crafts in the Kids Art Alley. When everyone gets hungry, sample local fare at one of the many food vendors.


1950’s Park Forest House Museum

Imagine if you could go back in time and take a stroll through a home in the 1950’s? Well, in Park Forest you can. This home was built in the early 1950’s and has been well preserved since that time.


You will see time period relics such as a washing machine, television, complete kitchen setup, kids’ toys, and more. This museum is usually only open two days a week so make sure to check out their website for up to date information to help you plan your trip.

This clean, well maintained park offers plenty of space for the kids to run off some energy. Take a seat at one of the many benches scattered about and let your little ones play at the extensive playground or try their hand at the obstacle course.


Enjoy a picnic lunch after a leisurely stroll around the park. Conveniently located near the local library, aquatic center, and our local, natural wetlands preserve.

The small but mighty venue might only hold around 250 people but there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Enjoy concerts, plays, poetry readings, dance recitals and more in this cozy setting. Adult beverages are available for purchase, the sound quality is excellent, and tickets are reasonably priced.
